ICNIRP Statement with Comments on the Laser Guidelines

ICNIRP has published a statement with comments on various aspects of the 2013 laser guidelines and exposure limits. Since the limits in IEC 60825-1 were copied from the ICNIRP Guidelines, this statement is also relevant for the classification of laser products. The statement, for which Dr. Karl Schulmeister was one of the main authors, is supplemented by a conference proceedings paper (NIR 2018) where the download-link is provided below.

The scope of the statement is to provide clarifying discussion and information for the application of the exposure limits, particularly with respect to extended sources and multiple pulses. For the wavelength range of 1250 nm to 1400 nm, to protect the cornea, it is recommended to apply the skin-exposure limits. The assessment is to be done with the averaging aperture defined for the cornea, i.e. for instance 1 mm for pulses. This additional limit is also going to be a requirement in the upcoming amendment AA:2021 for EN 60825-1 (details on the Amendment AA will be given in the first Newsletter 2021).

Publication: Laser safety analysis of irregular pulses

We are happy to provide the link to a recent publication of our team. In cooperation with the University of Tübingen and BOSCH, a generally applicable method to determine the laser safety limit correction factor C5 for irregular multiple pulses was developed and validated. This method is to be proposed to IEC TC 76 for consideration in the next edition of IEC 60825-1.
