Testing of LEDs and Lamps

We test LEDs and lamps (luminaires) and assign them to risk groups according to the standard IEC 62471 (in Europe: EN 62471). The risk group provides basic information as to how long a person can be exposed to radiation at the given reference distance before the biological exposure limits are exceeded. For the correct determining of the risk group, the spectral irradiance or the spectral radiance (depending on the type of limit) has to be determined at the reference distance.

Especially the measurement of the biologically effective radiance by means of imaging methods requires considerable metrological know-how (e.g. consideration of time-dependence relating to the angle of acceptance). Despite the complexity of the subject, we have developed our own evaluation procedure in order to be able to offer our clients accurate measurements with optimised reduction of effort and cost.

For radiation in the UV-range it is necessary to use double-monochromators, as diode arrays do not feature sufficient dynamics and stray light suppression. Our test centre is equipped with a portable double monochromator optimized for testing of solar simulators, as well as a larger double monochromator with computer controlled grating stages for the measurement over a large spectral range in one run.

The standard IEC 62471 is identical to the standard CIE S009 and as EN 62471 it is listed as a harmonised standard under the low voltage directive.
